Where to Touch the Future in Chongqing? Two Real High-Tech Spots You Can Actually Visit (2026 Experience Guide for Foreigners)

Think Chongqing Is Just Mountains and Hot Pot? Think Again

You know it for spicy food. You’ve seen its “magic” 8D roads on TikTok.

But can you touch China’s tech future here?

Most guides say: “No. It’s all factories and tunnels.”And they’re half-right.

Yes, there are no open doors at Huawei or BYD labs. But two public places let you feel smart cities, AI, and robot life — hands-on.

Take my friend Camila from Brazil, a teacher who came for hot pot.She left raving about robots and earthquake simulators.“I thought it would be boring,” she said. “But I screamed during the quake ride. My students won’t believe this!”

In this guide, I’ll show you:

  • The free science museum with Tesla coils and robot arm wrestling

  • A futuristic park where self-driving buses pick you up like magic

  • How to get in without WeChat or Chinese apps

Let’s skip the myths. Here’s what’s real.

Modern cityscape with tall, reflective skyscrapers surrounded by lush greenery. A central pathway leads through a plaza with colorful decor.
Chongqing Science & Technology Museum

【重庆科技馆】Chongqing Science & Technology Museum – Free Entry, Real Robots, Zero Boring Panels

Tired of temples and river views?

Then go underground — into tech.

【重庆科技馆】Chongqing Science & Technology Museum (Zhòngqìng Kējì Guǎn – a four-floor interactive center at Jiangbeizui, near the Grand Theater) is your best bet.

Free entry. No language barrier. Open Tue–Sun (9:30 AM–5 PM).

Just take Metro Line 6 → Grand Theater Station (Exit 3). Walk 3 minutes. Look for the white fan-shaped building.

Inside: 6 themed zones across 4 floors.

People explore a museum with a large globe display. Bright, modern interior with white pillars and blue accents. Engaging educational atmosphere.

For kids: 2F Children’s Science Park (Értóng Kēxué Yuán) has role-play games like “Little Chef” and “Smart Home.”Also try the static ball — touch it, and your hair stands up!

For adults:Go to 4F. Watch the Tesla Coil Show (11:30 AM / 3:30 PM daily). Lightning bolts crackle in the air. Safe, loud, and wild.

Try “Robot Arm Wrestling” — yes, you fight a machine. Most lose. One traveler from Germany lasted 12 seconds. He was proud.

Want more thrill?

3F has a Real Earthquake Simulator (Zhèndòng Tái – shakes like a 7.0 quake). Runs at 10 AM and 2 PM daily. Queue early.

Last year, Robert from the USA brought his teenage son:“He beat the robot at chess once. Got so excited. We stayed four hours. Didn’t even eat lunch.”

To solve this: Visit on a weekday morning.Avoid weekends — packed with school groups.

Pro tip: Use one booking code for your whole group. It allows six entries and multiple ins-and-outs on the same day.

Download Alipay or bring cash. Some snack machines don’t take cards.

【礼嘉智慧公园】Lijia Smart Park – Ride Self-Driving Buses in a Real City Lab (Chongqing high-tech experience guide for foreigners)

Still think self-driving cars are only in Silicon Valley?

Meet 【礼嘉智慧公园】Lijia Smart Park (Lǐjiā Zhìhuì Gōngyuán – China’s largest urban smart tech park, 3 sq km in Yubei District).

This isn’t a theme park. It’s a live test zone for AI roads, smart lights, and driverless shuttles.

And yes — tourists can ride them.

Free entry. Open all week.

Take Metro Line 6 → Jinshan Temple Station. Exit right into the park.

Two must-dos:

Autonomous vehicle with open door on a sunny street. Blue sign and no smoking symbols visible. Trees and buildings in the background.
Autonomous Shuttle Bus

First: Ride the Autonomous Shuttle Bus (Zìdòng Jiàshǐ Bāshì).No driver. No steering wheel. Just tap a screen to start.Runs every 15 mins along Lake Baiyun route.

Second: Visit the 5G+ Experience Hall (near Exit AB).

Try VR mountain climbing. Play air-piano with motion sensors.

All in English or simple icons.

There’s also an “Air Corridor” walkway — soft, bouncy floor feels like walking on clouds.

Best part? No crowds. Locals come for walks. Tourists? Rare.

Take Mia from Japan, a designer:“I’ve seen smart cities in Tokyo. But here, everything just… works. The bus stopped for a duck crossing. I laughed out loud.”

A red trolley on rails descends a hill, surrounded by trees and greenery. A river and distant hills are visible under a clear blue sky.
Funicular Railway

Here’s how to plan:

Use the park map on Amap (download before arrival).Or ask staff at the visitor center — some speak basic English.

Wear comfy shoes. The park is huge.Bring water. Few vending machines around.
