You’ve seen photos of Niubei Mountain (Niú Bèi Shān, 牛背山)—that sea of clouds wrapping around snow peaks like a dream.
But you’re told: “You must rent a car or join a tour.”
Wrong.
I’ve sent dozens of foreign hikers there using only public transport.
A Brazilian friend once said: “I thought it was impossible without driving.
But your plan worked perfectly!”
This guide shows you step-by-step how to get to Niubei Mountain from Chengdu—no car, no tour, no stress.
You’ll save money, avoid scams, and still witness one of China’s most epic sunrise views.

Why Niubei Mountain Is Worth the Effort
Niubei Mountain isn’t just “another hill.”
It’s a 3,666-meter ridge facing Mount Gongga (Gònggá Shān, 贡嘎山)—the highest peak in Sichuan at 7,556m.At dawn, clouds roll below you like an ocean. The sun hits snow peaks in gold.
It’s unreal.
A UK traveler told me:“I cried at sunrise. I didn’t expect nature to feel this powerful.”
Trust me:
If you skip Niubei because “it’s hard to reach,” you’ll regret it.
And you don’t need a car.
