You Don’t Need to Go to Chengdu to See Pandas
Here’s the truth: you can see giant pandas in Chongqing — and it’s way better than Chengdu.
Most tourists think: “I must go to Chengdu to see pandas.” So they spend hours on a high-speed train. Then wait 60+ minutes at Chengdu Panda Base (Chengdu Xiongmao Jidi). And still, they miss the best moments — like pandas eating or playing.
I’m a native Chongqing local. I’ve helped over 500 foreign travelers plan trips here. Last summer, I took my American friend, Jake, to Chengdu Panda Base. We arrived at 8 a.m. Still, we waited 45 minutes just to enter. The crowd was huge. At each panda house, more lines. By noon, we’d seen only two sleepy pandas from far away.
Then I took him to Chongqing Zoo (Chongqing Dongwuyuan) the next day. No line. No crowd. We walked straight to the panda area. Saw 12 active pandas — eating, climbing, rolling, even fighting playfully.
Jake said: “This was 10 times better than Chengdu.”
That’s why I wrote this guide.
If you want to see pandas up close, without wasting half your day in lines, go to Chongqing Zoo. It has 23 giant pandas — more than any other city zoo in China.
And guess what? It’s right in downtown Chongqing.

Why Chongqing Zoo Beats Chengdu Panda Base
More Pandas, Fewer People
Chinese Name: 重庆动物园熊猫馆 (Chóngqìng Dōngwùyuán Xióngmāoguǎn)
Chengdu has about 70 pandas — but spread across a huge base (over 3 sq km). You walk for hours. Wait in lines. Most pandas are far away or sleeping.
Chongqing Zoo has 23 giant pandas — all in one compact, easy-to-visit area. And no long lines.
A Canadian friend, Lisa, visited both places. “In Chengdu, I saw 3 pandas from 50 meters away,” she said. “In Chongqing, I stood 3 meters from a panda eating bamboo. It was magical.”
The zoo keeps pandas healthy and active. You’ll likely see them moving — not just napping.
My Advice: Visit between 9–11 a.m. That’s when pandas are most active — eating breakfast and playing.
Easy to Reach – Right in Downtown
Chinese Name: 重庆动物园 (Chóngqìng Dōngwùyuán), located in Jiulongpo District (Jiulongpo Qu)
Chengdu Panda Base is 10 km outside the city. You need a taxi or bus. Takes 40+ minutes.
Chongqing Zoo? It’s just 30 minutes from Jiefangbei by metro.
Take Metro Line 2 or 3 to Zoolin Station (Dongwuyuan Zhan). Exit 2. Walk 5 minutes. That’s it.
No traffic. No stress.
I take foreign friends here all the time. They love how fast and simple it is.
My Advice: Combine it with a visit to nearby Yangtze River Cableway (Changjiang Suodao). Both in one morning — easy.
Cheaper & More Visitor-Friendly (See pandas in Chongqing for foreign tourists)
Entry Fee: ¥30 (kids under 1.2m free)Opening Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (last entry at 5:30 p.m.)
Chengdu Panda Base costs ¥58. Chongqing Zoo is cheaper — and includes free English maps at the entrance.
Signs are in Chinese and English. Staff speak basic English. Some even carry translation apps.
A Brazilian couple, Rafael and Sofia, came last month. “We got lost at Chengdu,” Rafael said. “Here, a staff member walked us to the panda area. So kind.”
You can also buy panda snacks (like bamboo-shaped cookies) and souvenirs at the gift shop.
My Advice: Bring cash for small vendors. But Alipay/WeChat Pay works at the ticket booth.

See Pandas Doing Real Things – Not Just Sleeping
At Chongqing Zoo, pandas have large, natural enclosures.
You’ll likely see:
A panda climbing a tree (they’re strong climbers!)
Two cubs playing fight
A mom feeding her baby
One rolling on the grass like a big fur ball
I went last week. A young panda named “Xiao Liwu” was hanging upside down from a branch — eating bamboo! Crowds laughed and took photos nonstop.
In Chengdu, animals are often hidden or resting due to crowds.
My Advice: Bring your phone or camera. Morning light is best for photos.
Bonus: Pandas Are Just the Start
Chinese Name: 重庆动物园 (Chóngqìng Dōngwùyuán)
The zoo has over 250 animal species.
After pandas, check out:
White tigers (very rare)
Red pandas (small, cute, and active)
Asian elephants
Colorful birds in the aviary
Kids love the petting zone. Adults enjoy the peaceful lakeside paths.
Total visit time: 2–3 hours. Perfect for a relaxed morning.
My Advice: Don’t rush. Sit near the panda pool. Watch them swim — yes, pandas can swim!
Final Tips: How to Visit Like a Local
I’ve taken dozens of foreign friends here. Some made mistakes. (see pandas in Chongqing for foreign tourists)
So here’s my honest advice:
Go early — 9 a.m. is perfect. Pandas are awake and hungry.
Use DiDi (China’s Uber) — Tell the driver: “Take me to Chongqing Dongwuyuan.” Show the Chinese name.
Skip weekends if possible — Weekdays are quieter.
Don’t feed the animals — It’s not allowed. But you can watch feeding time at 10 a.m.
