West Lake Boat Tour Guide for Foreign Tourists in Hangzhou: Avoid Traps & Save Money

H1: Stop Wasting Money on West Lake Boats—This Guide Fixes It

Planning a boat tour on West Lake (Xihu, 西湖) but confused by the many options? Most foreign tourists pick the wrong boat and overpay. Last month, my friend Priya from Singapore spent ¥90 on a dragon boat—only to find she couldn’t get off midway.

This West Lake Boat Tour Guide for Foreign Tourists solves that. I’ve tested all 5 types of boats on West Lake. I compared prices, routes, and hidden fees. Every tip here is real—no guesswork, just clear advice to help you choose the best boat for your needs.

Whether you want to visit Xiaoyingzhou Island (小瀛洲岛) or cruise around the lake, this guide tells you exactly which boat to take, how much it costs, and what to avoid. Let’s dive in!

H2: 5 Types of West Lake Boats (Know This to Avoid Traps)

West Lake boats look similar, but their routes and prices differ a lot. Pick based on what you want to do—no more wasted money.

H3: 1. Island Tour Boats (Visit Xiaoyingzhou Island)

These boats take you to Xiaoyingzhou Island (小瀛洲岛,home to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon—Santan Yingyue, 三潭印月), the scene on China’s 1 RMB note.

There are two options: ¥55 leisure boats and ¥70 painted boats. My Canadian friend Lucas chose the ¥70 one thinking it’s better—he regretted it. Both boats reach the island, but the ¥55 one is way better value.

Stone lanterns float on a serene lake with glowing lights. Green trees and hills form the background, creating a peaceful atmosphere.

Pro tip: Keep your ticket! It includes round-trip boat ride and island entry. When leaving the island, you can take any boat—even the ¥70 painted one—with your ¥55 ticket. Skip foreign affairs boats here—they’re unnecessary.

H3: 2. Lake-Circling Boats (Cruise Around West Lake)

These boats go around the entire lake, no stops. There are three sub-types:

Dragon/Phoenix Boats (Longchuan Fengchuan, 龙船凤船) cost ¥90. They’re luxury boats with a free souvenir. You can take night cruises, but you can’t get off midway.

A large boat shaped like a golden dragon with traditional-style roofs sails on a lake. People are visible on the decks. Bright, sunny day.

Foreign Affairs Boats (Waishi Chuan, 外事船) cost ¥50. They’re similar to dragon boats but cheaper—still no mid-way stops.

Water Bus (Shuishang Bashijie, 水上巴士) is the best value. It’s ¥6-8 per stop, 30 minutes per trip. You can get on/off at 10 spots like Quyuan Garden (曲院风荷) and Broken Bridge (Duanqiao, 断桥).

Don’t waste money on dragon boats if you want to explore on foot—water bus is smarter.

H3: 3. Hand-Rowed/Roller Boats (Yinlu Chuan/Shouhua Chuan, 摇橹船 / 手划船) (West Lake Boat Tour Guide for Foreign Tourists in Hangzhou

These boats have a 船夫 (chuānfū, boatman) who rows for you. You can negotiate the route before boarding, and they charge by the hour.

Their biggest perk? They go to hidden spots big boats can’t reach—like Maojiabu (茅家埠) and Wuguitan (乌龟潭). But don’t use them to visit Xiaoyingzhou Island.

A Japanese traveler, Yuki, tried this once. The boatman charged her for waiting time, plus ¥20 extra for island entry. It cost her ¥230 total—way more than the ¥55 island tour boat.

H3: 4. Self-Driving/Self-Rowing Boats (Zikai Chuan/Zihua Chuan, 自开船 / 自划船)

Kids love these—you control the boat yourself. Self-driving boats are electric, slow, and safe for kids (no under-3s allowed). They cost ¥60 per hour with a ¥200 deposit.

Self-rowing boats are the cheapest (¥30 per hour) but simple. Don’t try to row to Xiaoyingzhou Island—it’s too far and tiring. They’re only for casual cruising in small lake areas.

Pro tip: Rent these at Beili Lake Wharf (北里湖码头)—the area is calm and perfect for families.

H3: 5. Shuttle Boats (Jiaotong Chuan, 交通船)

These only run on weekends and holidays. They have two two-way routes (most boats go one-way counterclockwise).

Locals pay ¥5, but foreign tourists pay ¥15. They’re great if you want to hop between two specific spots quickly—no need to circle the whole lake.

For European and American tourists: Most boat docks accept credit cards and Alipay. Use a stable VPN to open Amap (Gaode Ditu, 高德地图)—it shows boat routes and dock locations in English.

H2: Why Trust This Guide? My DolphinUnion Promise

I’ve helped foreign tourists plan Hangzhou trips for 8 years. I didn’t just research boats online—I took every single one. I waited in lines, talked to boatmen, and tested routes at different times.

Last year, a UK traveler named Tom used this guide. He took the ¥55 island boat and water bus afterward. He told me: “I saved ¥75 and saw more spots. The tip about keeping the ticket was a lifesaver!”
