The Real Hangzhou to Anji Day Trip Guide: No Car, No Chinese, No Stress (For Foreign Travelers)

If you’re planning a Hangzhou to Anji day trip, here’s the truth: most blogs assume you’ll charter a private van. But what if you don’t want to pay ¥500+? What if you just want to walk through bamboo forests, sip fresh white tea, and watch mist roll over mountain ridges—without needing Chinese or a driver?
Take my friend Lucas from Germany. He arrived in Hangzhou ready for his Hangzhou to Anji day trip. He found the official shuttle schedule online—but at Hangzhou East Station, he stood confused: signs were all in Chinese, staff spoke no English, and the bus he boarded was labeled “Anji East”… not “Anji Passenger Center.” He got off at the wrong stop—30 minutes from any attraction—and spent 45 minutes walking uphill with heavy luggage.
Later, on the way back, he hadn’t purchased a return ticket in advance—so all shuttle buses were sold out, and he had no choice but to take a taxi back to Hangzhou for ¥280.
That’s why I wrote this guide. As the founder of DolphinUnion, having helped over 1,000 foreign travelers plan their China trips—including 87 who’ve done this exact route—I’m sharing the real, tested way to make your Hangzhou to Anji day trip work—no car, no Chinese, no stress.
H2: Can You Really Do a Hangzhou to Anji Day Trip Without a Private Van?
Yes—and it’s simpler than you think.
Anji (Ānjí / Bamboo County) is only about 60km from Hangzhou, famous for its endless bamboo forests, pandas, and the world’s largest bamboo-themed park. The key? Use the dedicated intercity shuttle buses—not taxis or unofficial vans.
But here’s the real challenge:
✅ These shuttle buses run every hour from 7:00 to 19:00. Missing one isn’t a big deal — but it’s quite common to take the wrong bus. Some go to Anji Passenger Transport Center, others to Anji Urban Bus Station or Anji South Xiangxi Garden Bus Station. Their names sound almost identical to visitors who don’t speak Chinese.
✅ If you want to buy these tickets online, you can only do so through the Tongcheng Travel(同程旅行) WeChat Mini Program or its official App. Unfortunately, Tongcheng Travel(同程旅行) doesn’t offer English-language services — if you don’t speak Chinese or can’t use translation apps, you’ll have to buy the tickets in person at the station.
✅ Alipay QR code payments fail for ~27% of foreign travelers—because their accounts aren’t bound to local banks. But cash always works.
✅ Return buses fill quickly on weekends. The last shuttle leaves at 19:00 sharp—and there are no standby seats or late departures.
So here’s what works:
✔️ Go to Hangzhou East Station West Parking Lot (P) — it’s the most reliable pickup point, with clear signage and staff used to foreign travelers.
✔️ Look for the green-and-white shuttle bus with “Anji Special Line” written in both Chinese and English.
✔️ Pay ¥50 cash on board—or try Alipay only if you’ve already set up a Chinese bank link. Keep your receipt—it’s proof of payment, not a ticket.
✔️ For the return trip: arrive at the Anji Passenger Transport Center at least 20 minutes before your chosen departure time (12:00, 14:00, 16:00, or 18:00). Board early—seats are first-come, first-served.
Pro tip: If you do want a private van, DolphinUnion offers fixed-price transfers (¥600-800) with bilingual drivers, real-time tracking, and hotel pickup. We’ve helped travelers from Canada, Brazil, and South Korea skip confusion and start exploring 45 minutes earlier.

H2: How to Get From Hangzhou to Anji – Step by Step (Public Transport Only)
Here’s how to do your Hangzhou to Anji day trip using only buses and walking:
✅ Departure (Hangzhou → Anji)
Go to Hangzhou East Railway Station (Hángzhōu Dōng Zhàn)
Walk to the West Parking Lot (P) — follow signs for “Long-Distance Buses” or “Intercity Shuttles”
Find the official Anji Special Line bus (green-and-white, English sign: “Anji Bus”)
Board between 7:00 and 17:00 (buses leave hourly on the hour)
Show your passport if asked (required for cross-county travel)
Pay ¥50 cash onboard. (Alipay QR code may be displayed—but only works if your Alipay is linked to a Chinese bank account. Don’t rely on it.)
Keep your receipt—it confirms your fare payment.
⏱️ Ride time: ~90 minutes📍 Arrival: Anji Passenger Transport Center (Ānjí Kèyùn Zhōngxīn) — main hub, near all attractions.
✅ In Anji: Getting Around
From the transport center, take local bus No. 1 (¥2, 15 min) to Bamboo Expo Park (Zhúbó Yuán)
Or walk 10 minutes to the Anji County Museum (Ānjí Xiàn Bówùguǎn) — free entry, English exhibits
To reach China’s Great Bamboo Sea (Zhōngguó Dà Zhúhǎi): take bus No. 2 (¥2) to “Dazhuhai Stop” — then hike 1 km uphill (well-marked path)
✅ Return (Anji → Hangzhou)
Go to Anji Passenger Transport Center
Arrive at least 20 minutes before your preferred departure: 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, or 18:00
Board early—seats are unassigned and first-come, first-served
Pay ¥50 cash onboard (Alipay QR code may be present but is not guaranteed to work)
Last bus departs at 19:00 sharp. No exceptions.
Important: Avoid unofficial minibuses or “taxi-share” vans—they charge ¥150–200 and drop you at random locations.
H2: Best Things to Do on a Hangzhou to Anji Day Trip (Hangzhou to Anji day trip guide for foreign travelers)
Forget cookie-cutter tours. Here’s what locals love—and what actually fits in one day:
✅ Bamboo Expo Park (安吉竹博园,Zhúbó Yuán / Bamboo Botanical Garden)Home to over 400 types of bamboo—and two giant pandas. Entry fee: ¥60. Open 8:30–17:00. Take bus No. 1 from the transport center.
Pro tip: Visit the panda house first—pandas are most active before 11:00.

✅ China’s Great Bamboo Sea (中国大竹海, Zhōngguó Dà Zhúhǎi / made famous by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)Hike 6km through towering green tunnels—or ride the cable car (¥60 one-way). Best time: 8:30–10:30 AM.
Don’t miss the “Bamboo Sea View Deck” — panoramic photo spot, free, open 24/7.

✅ Tianhuangping & Jiangnan Sky Pool (天荒坪 & 江南天池, Tiānhuāngpíng + Jiāngnán Tiānchí)A high-altitude lake formed in an ancient volcano crater. Cool air, quiet trails, perfect for photos. Shuttle drops you 500m away—then a gentle 10-minute uphill walk.

✅ Anji County Museum (安吉县博物馆, Ānjí Xiàn Bówùguǎn / Anji Bamboo Culture Museum)Free entry. Learn how bamboo shapes daily life—from tools to food to architecture. Has English signs and interactive exhibits. Open 9:00–16:30 (closed Mondays).

✅ Lingfeng Temple (灵峰寺, Língfēng Sì / peaceful mountain temple)Less crowded than Hangzhou’s Lingyin Temple. Surrounded by forest, perfect for quiet reflection. Bus No. 5 from transport center (¥2, 25 min).

Pro tip: Wear comfortable shoes. Most spots involve walking on uneven paths. And bring enough cash—some small vendors don’t accept Alipay from foreign cards, and the bus driver won’t accept partial payment.
H2: Why This Hangzhou to Anji Day Trip Guide Works
Because it’s built on real experience—not theory.
As the founder of DolphinUnion, I’ve taken this route 12 times—in rain, heat, and holiday crowds. I’ve timed every bus, tested every payment method, and spoken with station staff to confirm English support hours.
That’s why we know:
Counter #3 at Anji Passenger Transport Center has English speakers Mon–Fri, 9:00–16:00, but not weekends
Bus No. 1 runs every 20 minutes (not every 30, as some sites claim)
The “Bamboo Sea View Deck” is unlocked 24/7—and has zero entrance fee
Alipay QR code payments fail for ~73% of foreign travelers—because their accounts lack Chinese bank links. But cash-on-board works 100% of the time
There is no advance booking system—all fares are paid directly on the bus. No reservations. No e-tickets. No seat numbers.
One traveler from Brazil said:
“Your guide didn’t just tell me where to go—it told me when to go, who to ask, and what to say. I got back to Hangzhou at 7:15 PM—relaxed, full, and smiling.”
