You probably know Chengdu's pandas and Leshan's giant Buddha. But have you heard of Panzhihua? My Canadian friend Sarah asked me this question last winter.
Most tourists visit Sichuan's popular spots. They miss Panzhihua - China's only city named after a flower. Sarah followed my advice and called it "the most unique Chinese city experience."
This guide will show you everything about Panzhihua. From steel heritage to tropical fruits.

Getting to Panzhihua from Chengdu
The high-speed train is your best choice. It takes about 5 hours. Tickets cost around 200 RMB.
Trains run daily from Chengdu South Station. Choose "Panzhihua South Station" for city access.
Flying takes 1.5 hours. But flights are limited and more expensive.
I recommend taking the morning train. You'll arrive in the afternoon ready to explore.

Must-Visit Attractions in Panzhihua

China Third Front Museum
Visit China Third Front Museum (Zhōngguó Sānxiàn Jiànshè Bówùguǎn). It tells Panzhihua's industrial story.
The museum is free to enter. It opens from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Tuesday to Sunday.
Don't miss the model worker handprint wall. It has over 2,000 historical items.
My British friend Tom was impressed. He said "this museum explains China's industrial revolution."

Yisha Ancient Village
Yisha Ancient Village (Yǐshālā Gǔcūn) is free to visit. It's called "China's First Yi Village."
The red-walled buildings are photogenic. The village layout is unique and peaceful.
Local Yi people are friendly. But few speak English.
Bring your camera. The traditional architecture makes great photos.
Skip Panzhihua Park Zoo
Panzhihua Park (Pānzhīhuā Gōngyuán) has a small zoo. The entry fee is only 5 RMB.
But my Australian friend Emma found it disappointing. The animals look sad and spaces are small.
Don't waste your time here. There are better places to visit.

Donghua Mountain Park
Donghua Mountain Park (Dōnghuà Shān Tǐyù Gōngyuán) offers great city views.
Take the mountain elevator. One way costs 6 RMB, round trip 10 RMB.
Visit Banshan Coffee at the top. The multi-level cafe has amazing views.
Stay until sunset. The evening lights over the city are beautiful.
Best Local Food in Panzhihua
Food is Panzhihua's hidden treasure. The tropical fruits will surprise you.
Try Hao Dama Restaurant (Hǎo Dàmā Cāntīng). It's in a local residential area.
The potato beef and garlic ribs are delicious. Each dish costs about 40 RMB.
Visit local farmers' markets. Fresh mangoes cost only 8 RMB per kilogram in winter.
