You probably know Wuliangye - one of China's most famous liquors. But do you know its hometown Yibin? My Spanish friend Carlos asked me this exact question last month.
Most tourists rush to see pandas in Chengdu. They miss this amazing city. Carlos followed my advice and called Yibin "the most surprising stop in Sichuan."
This guide will show you everything about Yibin. From its famous liquor culture to hidden ancient towns.
Understanding Chinese Baijiu
Baijiu means "white liquor." It's China's national drink. The alcohol content is high - usually 40-60%.
Yibin produces Wuliangye (Five Grains Liquor). It's one of China's top brands. The taste is strong and complex.
Trust me, you should try it once. But be careful - it's much stronger than wine or beer. (Yibin travel guide from Chengdu for foreign tourists)

Getting to Yibin from Chengdu
The high-speed train is your best choice. It takes only 1.5 hours. Tickets cost about 110 RMB.
Trains run every 30 minutes from Chengdu East Station. The schedule is flexible.
Driving takes 3 hours. The expressway is good. But parking in Yibin can be difficult.
I recommend taking the 8:00 AM train. You'll arrive at 9:30 AM feeling fresh.
Must-Visit Attractions in Yibin

Wuliangye Distillery Tour
You can't miss the Wuliangye Distillery (Wǔliángyè Jiǔchǎng). It's the city's main attraction.
The factory covers 10 square kilometers. You'll see giant liquor jars and traditional workshops.
My French friend Pierre loved the aroma. He said "the whole city smells like grains."
Tours are available in English. Book one day in advance.

Cuiping Mountain Park
For amazing city views, visit Cuiping Mountain (Cuìpíng Shān). The park covers 300 hectares.
Take the cable car up the mountain. It costs 15 RMB. The ride offers great views.
Then walk down through beautiful forests. The whole trip takes 2-3 hours.

Li Zhuang Ancient Town
Li Zhuang Ancient Town (Lǐ Zhuāng Gǔ Zhèn) is 20 kilometers from downtown. It's worth the trip.
The town has 1,400 years of history. Stone streets and traditional buildings are everywhere.
Visit in the evening when lights turn on. The night view is spectacular. Local performances start around 8:00 PM.
Entry is free. The town opens until 11:30 PM.

Skip Guan Ying Ancient Street
Guan Ying Ancient Street (Guànyīng Gǔ Jiē) looks nice in photos. But it's mostly shops selling souvenirs.
My British friend Emma found only tourist traps there. Don't waste your time.
Best Local Food in Yibin
Food is Yibin's hidden treasure. The flavors will surprise you.

Yibin Ranmian (Yíbīn Ránmiàn) is the must-try noodle. It's spicy and costs only 8 RMB. Any local restaurant serves good versions.
Shuanghe Lianggao (Shuānghé Liánggāo) is perfect for hot days. This rice cake with brown sugar costs 5 RMB.

He San Li Zhuang Bai Rou (Hésān Lǐzhuāng Báiròu) serves amazing pork. The meat slices are paper-thin. Go early to avoid crowds.

Practical Tips for Foreign Travelers

Taxis are affordable. A ride across town costs 15-20 RMB.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons. Summers can be hot and humid.
Why Yibin Beats Tourist Traps
